A mother-of-four has been given a suspended sentence following a spate of thefts in Letterkenny.
Among the incidents, Zaneta Adamajtys stole from a charity shop.
Adamajtys, a 37-year-old of Oliver Plunkett House, Oliver Plunkett Road, Letterkenny, was before Letterkenny District Court on Tuesday charged with three incidents of theft.
Sergeant Maurice Doyle outlined the charges to the court.
On October 9, 2023, Adamajtys stole property, namely a necklace and perfume, from McFadden’s Pharmacy, Oldtown, Letterkenny. The stolen items were valued at €100 and the incident was captured on CCTV.
On December 4, 2023, Adamajtys took a dress top, valued at €213, from the St Vincent de Paul shop.
In another incident, the accused woman stole €120 of cash from a female outside Dunnes Stores, Oldtown Road, Letterkenny.
Adamajtys has five previous convictions
Adamajtys elected to have her case heard at the District Court and pleaded guilty.
Mr Patsy Gallagher, solicitor for Adamajtys, said his client was suffering from ‘depressive difficulties’ at the time.
“She can’t give any reason for it and she accepts that this is unacceptable,” Mr Gallagehr said. “We fully appreciate the risk this lady is under, but she has taken steps to rectify the difficulties.”
Mr Gallagher said Adamajtys has had mental health difficulties and was asking the court for ‘an opportunity to redeem herself’.
Adamajtys, her solicitor said, has been getting assistance and has been prescribed ‘a number of medications which are severe but are working’. Mr Gallagher said that pressures in Adamajtys’s life have now dissipated now that she is residing in a different location.
Judge Ciaran Liddy said he had to consider Adamajtys’s previous convictions and the seriousness of the offences. Adamajtys was handed a six-month prison sentence, with the entirety suspended for two years.
