The race in the Letterkenny Municipal District has been anything but smooth.
As the recount gets underway this morning, candidates brace themselves for another long and tense day, and possibly an equally long night.
The recount was triggered in the early hours of this morning following a request from one of the candidates, Aontú’s Mary T Sweeney at the eleventh count.
The call was made by Sweeney on the advice of party leader Peadar Tóibín, and acceded by Returning Officer Seamus Canning.
At the time of the request, Fianna Fáil’s Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly was leading the poll, with Sinn Féin’s Gerry McMonagle and Tomás Seán Devine from the 100% Redress party also securing seats.
Outgoing councillors Ciaran Brogan (FF), Jimmy Kavanagh (FG) and Michael McBride (IND) were all deemed safe. All eyes remain on the final seat.
Sweeney is leaving no stone unturned in the scrutiny of today’s count.
