The six seats on the Donegal Municipal District Council have been filled after a mammoth eleven counts that took until after midnight to conclude.
Independents Jimmy Brogan and Niamh Kennedy, as well as Sinn Fein’s Michael McMahon and Fine Gael’s Manus Boyle were all deemed elected on the eleventh and final count.
Kennedy (2,067 votes) and Brogan (2,059 votes) both exceeded the surplus following the distribution of Noel Jordan’s surplus.
The final total of votes for McMahon on 1,931 and Boyle on 1,751 were enough to have them deemed elected after the elimination of the final other remaining candidate, outgoing Fine Gael councillor Barry Sweeny who finished with 1,532 votes.
Michael Naughton of Fianna Fail and Noel Jordan of Sinn Fein were the other two candidates who were elected on earlier counts.
