Two Donegal candidates spent almost €10,500 on social media advertising on Facebook and Instagram in the lead-up to the European elections.
Peter Casey (Ind) and Senator Niall Blaney (FF) forked out €5,583 and €4,859 respectively on Meta-owned social media sites in the 90 days before polling day on June 7, according to the Irish Independent.
Both men were eliminated from the Midlands North West constituency race without being elected. Outspoken Independent candidate Peter Casey obtained 28,497 overall votes before bowing out in the 14th count. Senator Blaney, on the other hand, was eliminated on the sixteenth count with 34,074 overall votes. Blaney started with 30,387 first preference votes, with the majority coming from the Donegal electorate.
According to the figures published today, Irish political parties and their candidates spent almost €500,000 on social media advertising ahead of both the local and European elections. The vast majority of that figure went on Meta-owned social media sites
